I have flown with the worst of airlines (Northwest) and now I can say that I've flown with the Best of airlines.
Recently, I had to make a LONG international trip to the east. A total of 20 travel hours each way. Both the domestic and international legs of my itinerary were handled by American Airlines.
From the start, at the check-in counter, it was a smooth ride. The counter staff were courteous and efficient. But what I was dreading was the tiny coach/economy seat that I was to spend almost a whole day in. My fears were quickly replaced by appreciative shock.
American Airlines is undergoing an "expanded coach" renovation- taking out several rows to make the remaining seats more comfortable. This was the roomiest, cushiest coach seat I have ever flown in. The headrest is adjustable according to height and size. You can flip these wing flaps for your head to settle more naturally. Its great support for sleep.
The overhead bins and under the seat storage space were of good size. And there was ample leg room to spare.
Each seat comes with its own TV screen. Not only that, you get to choose what you want to watch. Its cool! Instead of having to sit through mono-programming, they have various programming on different channels that repeat continuously- you can surf til you find what you like.
The service was excellent. The staff were all seasoned veterans with no-nonsense attitudes. They know what is required of them and of the passengers. These aren't stewards/desses that can be picked on. And they get the job done in a curteous, timely manner. Food was definitely above average for airline stuff. Landing and take-off were both barely noticeable.
American Airlines turned a potentially miserable experience into one that was quite pleasant.
