Our occasion to travel on ATA was a sad one, and on short-notice, to boot: we had to fly from NYC to California for a funeral last May. Our experience on this budget airline didn't help matters in the least.
The fare was cheap, to be sure, but the entire experience so wholly unpleasant that I will never fly ATA again:
Delays were long and unapologetic, the entertainment non-existent (the plane's VCR was broken). The food was pathetic (slimy sliced turkey-product on a hard and cold roll, nothing else), and the seating rows unbelievably cramped. The attendants spent the entire flight in the back of the plane chatting loudly, which posed a problem for those of us attempting to endure the trip by sleeping the entire way. (Not that there was enough room to really get comfortable anyway -- and on a cross-country flight, this posed problems for my 6'2" husband.)
The travel agent through whom we booked this flight noted that ATA's regular fare was lower than any other airline's bereavement discount, but after our entirely unpleasant experience - under unhappy conditions to begin with - I'll never fly ATA again, in any situation.
