Pros: The flight crew made us feel right at home.
Cons: The Atlanta parking lot's a mess
It's my fiance's fault... again. Her best friend her maid of honor moved to Atlanta with her brother. She missed her deeply and wanted to visit. So I'm looking for a cheap fare online. My friend's told me about Air Tran, but they didn't have any fares left for the days we needed.
U.S. Air is big in this area, but I couldn't figure out an easy way to use their online system. U.S. Air wanted me to choose flights before their sight would quote me a fare. There were literally hundreds of combinations of flights and I wasn't about to check them all out on 58 Kbps modem connection.
I had spent 13 years working for United Airlines and I knew from my experience that Delta Airlines was based in Atlanta and had a good reputation.
So I went to www.delta.com and it quickly gave me the least expensive combinations of flights. And I easily and quickly checked alternative departure cities in search of the ultimate fare. I found a decent fare out of Greater Pittsburgh Airport... NONSTOP to Atlanta! Whoopee!!! I thought Delta would be out of our league. We whipped out the credit card and bought it online. Be careful: Many of these fares permit NO changes, or have big penalties for changing the itinerary.
So we were waiting for tickets in the mail, but guess what? No Tickets... they handle it electronically at the airport. That made me a little nervous because I remember incidents of 'lost' reservations when I used to work for United (over 10 years ago). But I re-confirmed by phone and they assured me that all I had to do was go to the airport.
They were right. At the airport, check-in was easy and quick. Yet I had another nervous twitch as I said good-by to my luggage; I feared that I'd never see it again. However, I've traveled enough to know that I don't want to drag luggage everywhere at the airport and then try to stuff it in an overhead bin. Again, my fears were ungrounded. Delta quickly delivered our baggage to the baggage claim area and we were exiting the airport in no time at all.
But that's not the best part. The flight itself was not the smoothest due to weather in the area. The captain of the aircraft kept informed and actually gave us a mini-course in meteorology. He assured that 'your safety is our first priority'. He was able to change altitude to find a calmer air stream and we had a beautiful flight. He was truly customer-oriented and extremely professional. But the beauty of it all is that he was typical of the Delta flight crew, both in and out of the cockpit.
The flight back was more of the same: efficient, customer-friendly service. I know what it takes to get a flight out on time and please customers. Kudos to Delta for living up to their reputation. Even thought the flights were full both direction, my fiance and I enjoyed flying with Delta.
