IMPOSSIBLE to redeem miles for international travel

The Bottom Line: If you plan on using Alaska airlines mileage program to redeem your miles for international trips - look elsewhere.

I have been an Alaska Airlines MVP Gold member for many years and a member of their frequent flier program since 1998. Alaska's formerly great program has unfortunately gone completely bad with a minimum number of partner airlines and seats available for travel (unless you want to settle for Fresno, CA or Spokane, WA for your exotic vacation). In the past, I had no problem booking my international vacation (I have family in Europe) coach class on Alaska's Partner airlines. I routinely booked my vacation 3-6 months in advance without a hitch although I noticed it grew increasingly more difficult. In December 2005 I tried to book a simple trip to Hawaii in April 2006. Nothing available. I called United Airlines where coach available the dates I wanted no problem, making my miles reservations took five minutes and my husband and I took a fabulous and trip. In January 2006 I wanted to book a December 2006 trip to Europe or Africa through Alaska's "many" partner airlines. Nothing available. Not even first class. Africa? Nothing. Australia? Nothing. Alaska was reportedly re-negotiating with KLM and Air France. Five months later, today - I just called, Alaska is still doing so. I can only compare this with United Airlines where I also have frequent flier status and I NEVER have these problems booking international travel. Miles on Alaska do me absolutely no good if I can't use them, a complete deal breaker for me. I am sick of not being able to use my miles (over half a million accumulated), so I am switching over to United and will from now on only fly Alaska or its Partners if I absolutely have to.
