Pros:Low Prices, Many US Destinations, Free ticket for 8 round trip flights
Cons:No International Destinations, cattle car ambiance, no business class
The Bottom Line: Ok for the occasional short trip. Other airlines treat their frequent business travelers much better.
If you like shopping at WalMart, you may just like Southwest. The experience to me seems about the same. They are a no frills discount supplier (like Walmart). Ill go into a Walmark every now and then to buy something, but do not like the experience. I don't mean to sound like a snob, but flying is tough enough. I fly a lot for business and the traditional carriers will reward me for my loyalty with upgrades and other perks. Not so Southwest.
Their prices are low and they fly to a lot of US cities. If you do a lot of short haul flights and want to get free tickets for US domestic travel, they may be for you as their FF program credits based on flights (not miles). Eight round trip flights earns you one free round trip ticket. If you are going on a vacation and don't fly often I'd recommend them if their tickets are the cheapest and you are on a budget. But these are not concerns of the business traveler.
I travel a lot of longer haul flights and want to use my FF tickets to go somewhere exotic like Tokyo or Rio. Also prefer selecting my seat well before I fly. Every Southwest plane I have been on (I find I have to fly them about 5 - 10 times a year for business) is old and worn. Since there is no business class, of course there are no upgrades. Finally, they have no partnerships with other airlines for sharing Miles.
For those reasons, Southwest is one of the last on my list of carriers I would like to Fly.
