| JeffB's Full Review: Southwest Rapid Rewards |
Two words for Southwest Airlines and their frequent flyer program: “User Friendly.” It’s not based on miles, it’s based on trips – so very little math is required! It’s also very easy to earn free flights.
You get a credit for every one way flight you take. All you need for a free flight is 16 credits. Thus, for every 8 round-trip tickets you take, you get yourself a free flight – to anywhere Southwest flies. And they fly almost anywhere in the US.
They also make earning credits easy through various partnerships and promotions. If you use the Southwest Airlines/First USA Visa card you get 1 credit for every $1K you spend. They also give you 4 credits or so for signing up for the card. If you rent a car through one of their car rental partners (e.g. Alamo) you can earn more credits. If you book your flights on-line, they give you double credits, so a round trip earns you 4 credits instead of 2. That means you can earn a free flight in just 4 round trips. I just got 5 bonus credits for switching my long distance to MCI Worldcom! So, you can see, it’s pretty easy to earn free trips.
Another nice thing about their Rapid Rewards program (the name of the frequent flier program) is that once you are a Rapid Rewards member, you can call a special number to book your free flight and you’re rarely turned down. I’ve booked Friday night flights on the morning of the flight.
The final bonus is that everytime you earn a free flight, you get a book of free drink coupons, which makes that flight from Oakland to New Orleans for the Jazz Fest one big party. If you travel a lot like I do, you’ll earn a lot of free flights and more of these drink coupons than you can use. Don’t throw them away…buy your seat neighbors drinks (they’ll love you) or use them as bargaining chips for swapping seats when the plane is crowded.
Look for my epinion on flying Southwest Airlines…coming soon!
