I DIDN'T REALIZE I HAD ENOUGH FOR THE FREE U.S. ROUND TRIP!

Written: Aug 30 '01 (Updated Mar 30 '02)
Pros:UPDATE:SILVER WINGS PLUS OR MILEAGE PLUS ARE THE ONLY WAY TO FLY!
Cons:BE PREPARED AND GET YOUR FLIGHT SET UP 14 DAYS IN ADVANCE!
The Bottom Line: FIND OUT HOW MANY MILES YOU HAVE AND KEEP TRACK! 25,000 MILES OF POINTS GETS YOU ROUND TRIP ANYWHERE IN THE U.S.!

I just signed up for United's Silver
Wings Plus! What a deal! I pay $75. to join for 2 years. Then, I get 3 $25 certificates to use on any flight that costs over $150! Since I live in such a tiny rural area, it would (as an example) cost me nearly $600 cash to fly out of my local airport to Las Vegas and back! With Silver Wings Plus, it will cost me a mere $130, as long as I book the flights 14 days in advance! I need to be in Las Vegas for a store buying trip next week. The cost will be taken care of by using up the last of my mileage plus miles. Otherwise, it would have cost me a cool $600! I decided it was well worth the $75 to join the mileage plus, Silver Wings group, right then and there! You must be 55 years of age or older to qualify for this great deal. Remember, I can take a companion of any age along with me at this same price that I get for being over 55! I can take my grandson or my husband along with me, and that person is charged the same amount that I am! What a deal! Instead of our company being charged $1200, we will pay an easy $260. for both of us! I am very excited and happy about this!

I quit even using my mileage plus card with United, as I thought I'd need to fly all the time to get anything free. I was wrong! I went right back and wrote United about past trips, to get them counted up for free flights!

I really didn't understand this program, to start with. I knew a lot of people were using it, but, I had heard all the tales about people who were buying all they could in stores, and using flight mile charge cards to get enough points to fly for free. I neglected to keep track of my own mileage. I just KNEW I'd never get enough to use, anyway. WRONG! I finally called United to see exactly where I was in the 'free flight' conditions. I found out that I have enough air miles to fly anywhere in the U.S., round trip, for free!

All I needed was 25,000 air miles to do this. That sounds like a lot of miles I don't fly! Still, the miles counted the way that United counts them, add up very quickly! Since, I nearly always travel alone, it is no big deal for me to only have ticketing for free, for one person. That's all I need. I usually fly from Eureka/Arcata, CA to San Francisco, round trip. . .since it IS the only airline I can use to do it, from my small terminal. In early Sept., I will be flying from my airport, on United, all the way to Orlando, FLA, for a buying convention, for our store. This will put me over the 25,000 miles needed to fly anywhere in the continental U.S. for free, round trip! That means my next trip to Las Vegas, Nevada (where I go a lot), will be totally free, and I won't need to take the cheapest flights.
I like that, as the cheapest flight out of my area leaves at 5:00 a.m., and returns about 11:00 at night.

By talking to the customer service, I found out that any flights I had taken in the last 6 months were still available to add to my mileage plus amount. This is great for me, as I have flown 5 round trips to San Francisco in that time frame. I already had 15,000 miles in the 'account' but didn't think they amounted to anything! WRONG!

The mileage plus will give you upgrades and free flights! Use them well! Keep your ticket stubs after the flights, and check to make sure those tickets were 'counted'. You will need the number on your tickets to go back and get them counted. I am thrilled to know that I will be going back to Las Vegas in December, for a slot tournament that I am entered into for free.........will have free food, free deluxe suite, free limo to and from the airport, free spa privilages, and NOW, free transportation TO and FROM Nevada. There are two companies who claim to help you get milage plus points, but United does not accept. Being careful here, I suggest that you call United and ask which companies they are. Even if you only travel once in a while, the mileage is good for years of adding up!

I, now, love this program, and will keep strict track of their accounting of my miles. Free is cool!
