Hawaiian Airlines is considered the Number Two inter-island air carrier in Hawaii. I suspect this is the result of a lot of marketing hype on behalf of their one and only competitor. But as that old advertising slogan goes, perhaps because they are number two, they have to try harder. And they do.
My experiences over the past five years with this airline have been extremely positive. They tend to arrive at the time they say they will, with baggage and passengers intact.
The personnel are friendly and courteous. The onboard service is as good as their only competitor (Aloha Airlines.) But perhaps the most significant factor is that you can expect to get honest answers to your questions when any problem arises.
The reality of inter-island travel (for those of us who live in Hawaii) is that we often need to take a flight based upon a time schedule we are trying to meet. If we are flying to or from the mainland, and need a connecting flight, we tend to choose a carrier based upon time schedules. Inter-island flights in Hawaii are a lot like shuttle buses on the mainland. The quality of service between the two available carriers is usually minimal.
Yet, I find that Hawaiian Airlines tends to be more on time than Aloha (despite all of the advertising hype that Aloha delivers to the public.) This is purely my personal experience, and does not reflect any hard, statistical data compiled by the FAA.
If I ask someone to pick me up at the airport, I always ad 30 minutes to my expected time of arrival if I'm flying on Aloha. If I'm on Hawaiian, I just ask them to pick me up at the posted time.
