DILEMMA:
I've been up since 5 a.m. It was now 10 p.m. The package needed to go to L.A., but it was too late for pick-up by any of the "overnighter" companies. My boss tells me to personally take the package to its destination. I go online and find nothing that could be ticketed right away (so I know I'll get on the flight), besides the fact that I would have to change planes twice.
SOLUTION:
JetBlue.
1 - I went online, booked the flight and got a confirmation. I was also able to pick my seat, unlike with other carriers (they're blaming it on security measures).
2 - DIRECT flight!
3 - I could afford a last minute ticket!($109 each way)
After three hours of sleep, I was heading for the airport.
At the check-in counter, I was greeted with a warm "Good Morning" and a sincere SMILE! I tend not to expect such things in NYC area, especially at 5 o'clock in the morning.
My package, which was a fairly big and moderately heavy box (1ft x 1.5ft x 2ft; about 30 lbs.) had to be checked in, but, of course, x-rayed first. A very nice, young gentleman took the box on a cart and put it into the x-ray machine, while I was waiting a few feet away. Once that was completed, he handed me my boarding pass and wished me a "nice flight"!
ON THE PLANE
SEATS are leather (not that it makes a difference) and bigger than average. There was no "cramped in" feeling like on other planes in coach class.
If someone tells you that the seats were small, they might have been expecting 1st class-size seating, because of the leather -- it throws people off.
LEG ROOM...hmm... If you ask me, it's still not enough, but I am 5'11" and more than half my body is legs. If you compare JetBlue leg room to any other airline's coach class leg room, JB is definitely the winner.
AISLES are the "average" width. Other than getting on and off the plane and maybe couple of trips to the lavatory, I really don't spend much time in the aisles, so I don't think it's that important that they would be wider. I always hear people complaining about the size of the aisles - Why? What are you going to do there? Sit down!
SNACKS - great variety...and you may ask for seconds. Definitely beats a bag of peanuts!
FREE DIRECT TV -- I don't see why people are complaining. On other airlines, you don't get anything free. Sure, you can watch a movie (of their choice), but you have to pay for it (or the headphones). Here you get 24 channels. You may not like them all (heavens forbid you'd watch something educational!), but there is also A&E, which has more "normal" programming. Besides, as JetBlue advertises, "Beats staring at the tray table."
STAFF (on and off the plane) is very pleasant, very helpful, and just "too good to be true." Some may say, 'how long will that last?', but "nice breeds nice" so as long as you're nice back to the staff, they will not change; they will have no reason to become the "average airline".
There is one thing some people may not like, which I think actually teaches some responsibility -- YOU GET TO HELP WITH THE CLEANUP. It's not as bad as it may seem. To keep the costs down, JetBlue doesn't have a separate cleanup crew, it's the flight attendants and the passengers doing the cleanup. This means, instead of throwing wrappers and other trash on the floor and leaving the plane, you get to hand it to the crew, so the next flight can leave right away.
