I am a very nervous flier. I feel as though I age years with every bit of turbulence I experience when on an airplane. But when our Thanksgiving plans required us to go from New York to Florida, I realized flying was the only way to get from here to there and still have time for turkey. JetBlue was a new carrier in our city, and I had heard good things about them, so I took a chance and booked our tickets.
Now comes the good part: JetBlue met or exceeded my expectations in every way. Our flight to Kennedy in New York City left on time, was smooth as silk, and arrived early. We had a short layover in NY and the crew brought bagels and cream cheese onto the plane for us. We left promptly from Kennedy and, when we encountered a bit of turbulence, the pilot came on the PA immediately to state that the rest of the flight should be smooth - and it was. We were on JetBlue's maiden voyage to the Ft. Myers airport, and when we arrived (again, early), the plane was sprayed down (as is custom for an inaugural voyage), we were given momentoes, and met with tv cameras and JetBlue officials inquiring about our flight. I truly felt like a valued customer.
JetBlue has certain unique features which I found particularly attractive. All the seats are leather and fairly large. Each seat has a small tv which plays 24 channels through Direct TV - complimentary headphones are distributed at the gate and tv viewing is free. This kept my 6 year old happy for the duration of the flight. Beverage service is also free and the snacks are actually good and edible. We had the option of chocolate chip cookies, gourmet potato chips, bagel chips, animal crackers or pretzels.
The prices on JetBlue are also excellent. For three of us to fly round trip from Upstate NY to Ft. Myers, FL was under $1000 during Thanksgiving, which is peak time. But best of all was the service. On many carriers I feel as though I am little more than cattle moved in, squished into a too-small seat, treated inconsiderately, and moved out. On JetBlue I felt as though the pilot and attendants were there to make your trip enjoyable. They were fun, chatty, and obliging. I had not experienced that on a plane in a long, long time.
Currently JetBlue serves only a handful of cities; most in New York and Florida. Hopefully they will expand their service as their reputation and name catches on.
Overall I still dislike flying. I still cringe when the plane takes off, and try not to break out in a sweat during the bumps during the ride. However, I truly enjoyed my experience with JetBlue and would not hesitate to fly with them again.
