I just returned from a flight during a winter weekend that could have been terrible - and for many fellow travelers in the airline world it certainly was with delays, cancellations, etc.
However, despite the mishaps that caused a bit of discomfort, I am happy to report I felt little to none of those effects during my trip.
Upon leaving Philadelphia International on Friday night I was checked in by a gem of a Midwest employee - I happily was expecting the friendly demeanor from past experiences with these folks. Although some of the other airlines are feeling pressure and tension, even if Midwest is facing the same issues, it wasn't apparent with Andrew. (thank you, Andrew) I was quickly checked in and processed through and headed to my gate. A slight delay (perhaps 5 min or so) but we were quickly placed on the flight and headed out. The cushy leather seating is wonderful and you have so much room to move - compared to the cloth covered bench seat you encounter on other airlines. The attendants and crew are fabulous and friendly - this must be a requirement I believe. They move through with beverage service and the optional snack purchase if you care for it. They don't skimp on your drinks - even though the complimentary glass of wine has been eliminated you now pay the usual $5 a glass like other airlines for that and other alcoholic beverages. However, as many other Midwest folks make note of - the serving of the baked on-board warm chocolate chip cookies are the highlight of the flight. Plus, they will come back through the cabin offering coffee or even a glass of milk for you to have with your two just out of the oven cookies. Such a treat for "kids" of any age...
Upon arriving in Milwaukee, something was amiss either in weather or air traffic and many flights were delayed. My flight to Grand Rapids, MI was pushed back about an hour. No worries, the staff at the counter were still smiling, happy and made all passengers who were tired and not happy with the delays grin a little and keep us amused without being too annoying and get us out as quickly as possible. I can report that unlike many scenes you usually see with delayed flights, passengers were patient, calm and everyone just tried to take it in stride. You don't see this nowadays as I am quite used to folks going a little crazy with other airlines...again, kudos to the Midwest Express folks.
I finally was boarded on one of the skyway jets and arrived in good spirits - could have been the chocolate perhaps.
On my return, I was unfortunately delayed about an hour due to bad weather both in Michigan and in Milwaukee. There were at least 5 passengers flying to Boston and Baltimore called up and explained to that their flights would not be possible. They were efficiently booked on other flights with another airline and processed through. No yelling, no exasperation - kudos to you Midwest Express AGAIN. Haven't seen calm passengers like this in a while. The rest of us made it safely to Milwaukee where they were busy plowing the runways and deicing like mad. My flight to Philadelphia was set to take off 3 min from when I arrived so I did have to run to my gate - only to sit on the plane for another half hour while they deiced the plane two times. I had a sneaking suspicion that my baggage might not be transferred in time due to all the weather interruption and delay - and when I arrived in Philadelphia I was right. Yes, my baggage was lost but as fate would have it my friendly employee, Andrew, was on duty again that night (thank goodness someone could take care of my sanity) and he was very friendly, very helpful and even offered to call if it was found that evening. I was encouraged to call back in a few hours to see if it arrived on the next flight behind mine. At 10pm I did call and he explained that the flights were running as close to on time and once in he would check for me. He then explained that he had sent out a check to other attendants in front of the computer systems to check in Milwaukee, Omaha and a few others in case my bag ended up there. Wow.
Then (due to my own encouragement to call if it was found) at 11:45 he came off duty but took time to call me and let me know my bag had been found. Andrew Gates - exceptional Midwest Express employee. Extraordinary! They will be delivering it after I get home from work today - another nice touch to work with my schedule since I won't be home to receive it for a day delivery.
I am duly impressed with Midwest Express - it may be a bit pricey at times, I lucked out with a great flight deal this time. Amazing, fabulous, wonderful...the list could go on. No major complaints given the usual mishaps and service that is encountered by the public these days. I must say it is nice to know that at least one airline is showing some respect to their customers as prices escalate and we generally hear about all the problems with the airline industry. A shining star in a sometimes murky sky.
Thank you for your exceptional ways, Midwest Express.
