| Jennlee.2's Full Review: Midwest Express |
I have flown on many of the large air carriers in the US and the quality of the flights and service does not compare with Midwest Express. Based in Wisconsin, Midwest Express is a small airline that began as corporate air transportation for executives of the Kimberly Clark corporation. In the 1980's Midwest Express formally came into existence for public service.
Flights center around the hub of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and there is also a smaller hub at Omaha, Nebraska. They fly to a number of cities in the United States, making them a great alternative for the Midwestern flyer. If you're flying in or out of the Midwest, consider Midwest Express as a great alternative to the larger carriers. Just some of the cities they serve include: San Francisco, LA, Las Vegas, Phoenix, Denver, Dallas, San Antonio, Kansas City, Omaha, Des Moines, Indianapolis, Madison, Appleton, Cleveland, Columbus, Atlanta, Tampa, Ft Myers, Orlando, Ft Lauderdale, Raleigh/Durham, Washington DC (Dulles & National), Philadelphia, Newark, New York, Hartford, and Boston.
In my experience as a coach flyer who searches far and wide for good fares, Midwest Express has usually been among the lower fares for a number of flights I have researched. The cost is comparable to flying United or Northwest usually.
Here's what your reasonable fare gets you on this carrier: Good service, business class seating, excellent meals and on-time flights. As a former United flyer, I find the difference amazing and ask myself why I didn't try Midwest Express earlier.
All seats on Midwest Express are business class. Large leather seats, two together and a good amount of leg-room make regular coach service on other carriers feel like you're flying in an egg carton. It's business class without the high cost.
The meals I've experienced on Midwest Express far surpass anything I've had on other carriers. Complementary champagne is served as well. The food is high quality and fresh, and almost too abundant. It's served with real glassware.
The service is excellent. The attendants are very polite and good at their jobs. The service is truly a level above coach. Hot towels are provided, and the drink and meal services go very smoothly and quickly.
The flights that I've been on have always left on time or at most 10 minutes late. This is a far cry from some carriers to whom a 30 minute or 1 hour delay is almost standard. I don't know Midwest's record on delays, but I'd guess it would be lower than many other carriers.
Most of Midwest Express planes are DC-9's or in the MD-80 series. Many are planes purchased from other airlines. Smaller than the larger commercial jets, they provide a high level of comfort and service.
Nothing's perfect, there's a couple things that I'd suggest to Midwest Express. First, add foot rests to the seats. For shorter people, the business class seating is a little higher and a foot rest would have been wonderful. Second, add soundproofing to the MD-80's, particularly in the rear of the cabin. Engine noise is fairly loud there. Not so bad that you can't relax, but it could be better. Third, add more cities to their destinations. This should come, as the airline has had great success.
Overall, I'd recommend Midwest Express highly.
