When planning my family's recent trip to Washington DC, I started by looking on the internet for discount fares. After much searching, I broke down and called Rose, my local travel agent, who handles all of my travel arrangements. Call me old-fashioned, but I do like the personal touches given by real live agents…..but that is another Epinion.
When I asked Rose to price airfares from Omaha to DC, she right away suggested Midwest Express. I had heard of them but had never booked a flight with them. Rose went on to explain that they were her personal favorite carrier and she gave me several reasons why. After flying with them, I can see why she recommended them so highly!
Upon entering the plane, one of the most noticeable differences over other carriers was immediately apparent. The entire passenger section contained high back leather seats situated with four in a row with the center aisle running between them so that there were only two seats on each side. This means no middle seat...*YIPPEE* Legroom was plentiful and the seats themselves were spacious and comfy. This was a big improvement over other flights where I felt trapped in a narrow seat with my knees up to my chin. And then there is what I call the "businessman's sandwich"…sitting in the middle seat with two snoring men in suits on each side of you. Don't laugh…it's happened to me on other carriers, but not with Midwest Express! The plane itself was very clean and well tended to. I can't stand seeing other peoples nose marks on the windows and my window was clean and clear of any smudges left by former occupants.
Rose suggested that we not eat before out flight because we would be well fed on the plane. Again, Rose knew what she was talking about! On our flight to DC we were served breakfast. No mere breakfast of a bagel and peanuts with Midwest Express. Our breakfast consisted of a French onion omelet, fresh fruit, yogurt, and breakfast potatoes. It was outstanding! On the trip home, we were treated to marinated chicken breasts (served chilled), roast beef with horseradish sauce, fresh vegetables, and homemade bread. For dessert, we were served their famous chocolate chip cookies. They were even warm.
Although we did not have much contact with the flight crew other than the serving of food and drinks, they were all cheerful and helpful to passengers who did require assistance. Even the ticket agents were polite and helpful in answering ticket questions that I had.
One of the best things about our flights was that they were both on time! Even though we did not have any time concerns, such as catching a connecting flight, I had hoped that the flights would be on time and they were. We left exactly on time on both flights and even arrived a few minutes ahead of schedule on our return flight, thanks to a tail wind.
Even though our tickets with Midwest Express were a little more than with other carriers offering the same flight ($12 a ticket), it was money well spent. My overall impression of them is that they are an outstanding organization who really cares about their customers. They not only talk about customer service, they practice it. From now on, I will fly Midwest Express at every opportunity. Thanks Rose
