Lately, most airline travel has been a miserable experience- flights packed to capacity, flights delayed and cancelled, screaming children, surly service, etc, etc. Those who say it's as bad as a bus haven't traveled by bus, I suspect, since an intercity bus provides much more room, is almost always on-time, and rarely is as crowded as an air flight today. The fact is almost all airlines have sunk to a level of service that makes air travel simply a necessary evil.
This past week however, I traveled on Southwest for the first time. At first, I was thrown by the long line to get a number, but the system works! You get a number, and when they board, they do it in groups of 30, so that WHEN you get your number determines what kind of a seat you'll get. No seats are reserved, so the first people on the plane get the best seats. If you get to the gate early, you'll get a lower number, and you'll board earlier.
All the people who work for Southwest seem to be having fun, and it shows. They make jokes, smile and generally are pleasant to be around, and have serve you. Even when things go wrong, as they did on the first part of my trip- when we arrived too late in Phoenix to fly in to San Diego- the Southwest folks made things as pleasant as possible. They set us all up at a local hotel, and set new reservations in the morning to get us to San Diego. The luggage was handled well, and they were always smiling.
And their prices are far below the other airlines- my flight from DC to San Diego was only $322 round trip!!
If anyone can make flying fun again, it will be Southwest. Good work, Southwest- I'll be flying with you again!!!
