Pros: none
Cons: not worth the money - which will NOT be refunded if you get bumped
The Bottom Line: Don't touch United First. Outbound service was unbelievably disappointing. And an involuntary downgrade on the return without an appropriate refund crossed the line from bad service to unethical business practice.

I paid a lot of my own money for international first class tickets (from the US to Canada.) I wanted to make a big trip special. The results were quite severely disappointing:
1. No food, no movie / TV, and the chair wasn't all that comfortable. I call this Economy Plus, at best. The flight attendant actually told us she had exactly one packet of pretzels per passenger - but we could have a second if one of the other passengers slept through drink service. Pathetic.
2. No lounge access. I checked, and the competition from Air Canada welcomes first class passengers from the US into their Maple Leaf lounge. United seems in general to pay more attention to frequent flyers than those who've paid a premium fare.
3. I got bumped into economy on my return, and United has some crazy expensive full coach fare they use to justify a very low refund. (Seriously: tickets were $1550 a piece when coach fares were available at $349, and my refund was $39.)
4. Pretty serious run around from customer service. I've lost count of phone calls and e-mails. And I'm pretty sure the e-mails are handled by some AI software they haven't completely debugged. Answers certainly never seem to reflect a very thorough understanding of my initial e-mail.
Bottom line: United's first class service hardly deserves the name. It certainly isn't worth the money. And the real shocker is that they may not deliver the service - but definitely won't refund the cost.
