United Airlines offers Bogus overbooking vouchers- make them pay you ONCE

Pros:none
Cons:avoid at every turn unless they are your only option.
The Bottom Line: AVOID UNITED if you can

We got booted off a flight from Denver to Wyoming- a secondary Skywest flight that was of course overbooked but everyone showed up- so somebody had to go. This was two days before- and you have to get the incredible import of what I am about to say as a former legislator- die hard Republican - I may vote for Obama because of what Ray LaHood is doing to these absolutely slimy airlines--- making them compensate people double and triple for overbookings and requiring them to generally not be able to squirm out of tarmack delays after Aug 23, 2011. Problme was... we were flying days prior.

Long story short, if you get bumped on United, they are required to pay you DOUBLE to amount in flight dollars(vouchers), but here's why its bogus and here's what you do about it: DEMAND they give you the vouchers in a single voucher amount- not broken up into 5 or 8 or even three vouchers- JUST ONE and only one. Refuse it otherwise and ask for complete compensation under the law and refuse to sign ANYTHING giving up contract liability rights until you get exactly what you want- here's why- when you go to redeem, as we did, our $800.00 in $100.00 vouchers, they only allow you to use ONE voucher per trip AND the ALL expire within a year. As well, you can not use a voucher to completely pay for a ticket price, and obviously excluding taxes and fees. As such if you want them broken up, do it knowing what the cost of a ticket might be that you might want to buy later and have them issue ONE for just UNDER that price. Unless you travel all the time, you might as well throw away the rest- Complete and utter bullsheet.

As well, if you ever have a problem with United, call your congressperson and complain. The reason the airlines get away with this crap is because they lobby Congress incredibly adeptly. You can look your congressperson up on the web and leave a message with their staff- it gets to the Congressperson or Senator in the form of interesting ones pulled aside or simply the numbers on a given topic get lopsided and believe me, they do pay attention. If you do not call, they hear solely from the airline lobbyists. So, when you're sitting there at the airport wanting to scream at someone, I'd ask you start doing what more and more are doing- smartly and calmly speed dialing your congresperson instead of calling the endless automated telephone numbers for the sirlines. This stuff is beginning to work- the new regs are proof of that. Kepp complaining... the squeaky wheel gets the grease.
