Pros:Safe, tolerable service, fairly comfortable
Cons:Checked bag fees, merger confusion, service incosistencies.
The Bottom Line: Overall United is a good airline although it comes nowhere close to airlines like Singapore Airlines, Emirates, Cathay Pacific, etc
United has had many ups and downs over the course of its life. The most recent the merger with Continental. Many of the new policies are closer to PMCO (pre merger Continental). Economy Plus is a great option on some flights. The newer planes it makes a huge difference on long haul flights. For example a recent flight on a PMUA (pre merger United plane) from Buenos Aires (EZE) to Newark (EWR) on a 767-300 the Economy plus added a good 4-5 inches of extra room and made the flight much better, BUT this does not mean this is always a good option. I have been on flights that all they have done is stick a label that says economy plus on it and charge you extra. It is a good option if you can get it for free or you are certain you will be on a plane with economy plus seats. The merger has caused much confusion within the airline with many workers reverting back to there respective airlines pre-merger policies which can be an issue when you are trying to make a flight changes, and it is confusing for all involved. The economy experience is bearable nothing special, but not horrible either. The meals served internationally are okay, but the secondary meal for example on a flight that serves dinner and then something before landing do not expect the second meal to last you long as it is barely a meal. The level of service provided fluctuates greatly with the particular person you are talking to some are very nice and want to make your flight as comfortable as possible and other couldn't care less. As with most airlines delays are common although my experience have been that they are very helpful in rescheduling you through any option they can find, but that also depends on the gate agent. Carry on bags are an issue as United does not enforce there size and weight limits so overhead bins fill up very quickly, but if you do not have space they will gate check your bag for free.
