We sailed to Alaska on this ship in the summer of 1998, and it was a terrific experience for several reasons:
1) Even though this ship is one of the biggest on the Inside Passage route, it doesn't feel like it. Often throughout the day, we found ourselves in a quiet place w/o many people around.
2) We have taken cruises on much smaller boats, and the wave action was very noticeable. Not on the Galaxy. This ship is a smooth sailer.
3) The food was very high quality; much higher than NCL.
4) Our cabin was an inside, high floor cabin. However, it was roomy enough and always clean.
5) If you've heard Alaska is only for old fogies, think again. This cruise offers plenty of activities geared toward the active crowd. As an example, we took a helicopter to a glacier where we were supposed to go on a dog sled ride. Even though the dog sled was cancelled due to weather, the glacier walk was still an adventure. We also took several nature hikes and saw spectacular scenery.
6) The Alaskan glaciers are a site unlike anything I've ever seen. If you're not awe inspired, you're not human.
Some tips:
1) Bring rain gear. We cruised at the beginning of August, and it drizzled in most locations. Not enough to ruin our fun, but enough that we were glad to have our water proof jackets.
2) Bring binoculars. Nature watching is one of the main draws of Alaska, but you need some good binoculars to get that up close look.
3) If you're travelling as a couple, tell them it's your anniversary. You'll get a table for two at dinner (instead of sitting at the cattle call tables) and you'll get a special dessert one night.
