We just returned from our honeymoon to Alaska on the Celebrity Mercury. It was in a word - fabulous!
Our stateroom was "Concierge Class" and included a veranda. The "Concierge Class" status let us skip the entire line for embarkation. Our room included nice touches such as fresh flowers and plush bath robes. The service in our stateroom and in the Main Dining Room for dinner was impeccable.
The ports of call were Juneau, Skagway, and Ketchikan. I highly recommend Whale Watching in Juneau and the Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve Float Trip in Skagway. Skagway was by far our favorite port. Though the walk to the shops there was longer than the other ports, it was well worth the walk.
Our visit to the Hubbard Glacier was breath-taking; though, the staff told us that we were able to get much closer than some of the other trips lately. Be sure to get up early for this visit. Sailing through the ice in the water, then hearing the noises of nature at the Hubbard Glacier is a once in a lifetime experience.
Wildlife was abundant. From the ship we saw dolphins and harbor seals. On the whale watching excursion we saw Humpback Whales, Sea Lions, and Bald Eagles. Some of our friends saw a Grizzly on an excursion to a rainforest sanctuary in Ketchikan which was highly unusual due to the extreme temperatures we were experiencing. Also in Ketchikan others on the cruise reported seeing Orcas.
There was never a lack of food or drink. I read another review that had some great advice: take your own tumblers if you like to drink a lot of juice, water, or tea. The cups near the drink machines are small, and I was glad to have the tumbler.
Some of our favorite on-board activities were the talks by on-board Naturalist, Brent Nixon, the Thalassotherapy pool in the Aqua Spa, and a Couples Massage Class.
Disembarkation was a breeze. Unlike many other cruise lines, we were able to stay in our stateroom right up until our time to disembark.
We had the hottest weather in Alaska since the 1950's. It was 90 degrees. The staff kept telling us that this was highly unusual and that most people have weather with gray skies and cool temperatures.
We cannot wait to go back. I would highly recommend taking the Celebrity Mercury to Alaska. Next time we will go in late July or August to have a better chance of seeing bears.
