| DOS2000's Full Review: Celebrity Mercury |
We took the Celebrity Mercury in October 1998 on a Western Caribbean itinerary (Key West, Cozumel, Playa del Carmen, and Grand Cayman). With airfare it was around $1100 per person.
This was our first cruise and it exceeded our expectations! When we first boarded the ship we thought, "this is nice, but we don’t need to cruise again." By the time the cruise was done, we couldn’t wait until our next cruise. We were very surprised and pleased with our cabin. It was a lot larger than we thought it would be.
The staff was wonderful and attentive, particularly the dining room staff. We were lucky to have our own table for 2, and it was like having a romantic dinner every night. The food at dinner was fabulous. There was an ample selection and my sometimes-picky-eater husband always found something to eat and was always happy with his meal. By the second evening, our busboy would bring our after-dinner beverages without even asking and our waiter remembered my food allergies and steered me clear of food I should not eat.
The entertainment was good, although the shows were geared more to an older crowd. The pool deck was often crowded and it was hard to find lounge chairs near the pool, but there was always lounges available some where. We enjoyed the art auctions- it was a nice mid-afternoon diversion.
There were some things I didn't like, though. I thought the lunches were terrible! They never seemed to have anything that appealed to either of us. It was too warm for the hot and heavy choices on the buffet, we got tired of the pasta bar, the grill items were so-so.
Second, we thought that there wasn’t enough information available on the excursions. We went snorkling in Cozumel and asked ahead of time if everything was included in the price and also asked if there would be a place to put our personal items while we were in the water, but no one knew. On the trip to Tulum we were told that everything was included in the price of the tour. On the bus, however, we were told that it costs extra to take the tram to the site. We were never given the boxed lunch that was said to be included, and our tour guide and bus driver kept trying to sell us things. I felt as though Celebrity did a terrible job in preparing us for the tours and we did not appreciate being accosted and solicited with trinkets.
I must add, that despite the problems, we had a wonderful time. In fact, we were on the cruise the week before Hurricane Mitch hit the area. It rained for the last 3 days of the cruise and the water was very rough (it was quite a rough ride sometimes). That didn’t stop us from enjoying the cruise and looking forward to our next cruise. We would definitely consider cruising on Celebrity again. We compare every vacation to this cruise and consider it out best vacation ever,
