Pros:Food is excellent, staff is attentive, the ship is made for KIDS.
Cons:Some ports of call not family friendly.
The Bottom Line: I recommend this cruise to FAMILIES - although we saw many older couples, singles, etc. Recommend this cruise to families with children between the ages of 4 to 14.
You are in store for the most memorable vacation of your life - pure Disney-style magic!
The ship is huge - we hardly ever felt like it was 'crowded' even though there are over 1500 passengers on the boat.
PORTS OF CALL: Western Caribbean
Key West, Grand Cayman, Cozumel, and Castaway Cay.
TIME OF YEAR: We went in July 2002.
COST: $6615 Two adults, one teen, one 10-year old.
US CITIZENS
Documents needed: Passport or Birth Certificate, and a Photo ID (needed at check-in). Photo ID needed when getting on and off the ship.
NON-US CITIZENS
Check with the travel agent or the US Immigration office.
BAGGAGE AND GROUND TRANSFERS
We drove our automobile to Florida so we did not need this service. We were able to leave our vehicle in the parking for $8/day.
Contact the Disney Cruise Line Reservations Center at 1-800-511-1333 for more information.
HOW MUCH TO PACK
Two suitcases are allowed per person for the valet to transport up to your stateroom.
You may carry aboard one day bag plus a purse, briefcase or backpack. You should carry-on all valuables, baby-care or medical items. Also fragile items such as cameras, camcorders, computer equipment. NO COOLERS!
We used backpacks and carried a beach bag or two.
CHECK-IN AT THE PORT TERMINAL
Port Canaveral is the home of the Disney Magic and Disney Wonder. It is located about one hour from Orlando where Disney World is located.
You will need to have your documents available (see above) for each member of your party. You will then be given a Key to the World card which is an identification and credit card all in one. Even a minor child has charging privleges unless you change it at Guest Services.
ATTIRE
Casual wear (shorts, slacks, sundresses, jeans) and comfortable shoes were worn in the daytime.
For dinner no shorts, jeans or tank tops.
There is a formal night and a tropical themed dinner.
STATEROOM
Our room was on Deck 8 and included a king-sized bed, sofa bed, and two berths (sleeps five) a veranda, two bathrooms (toilet/sink and sink/shower). TV with satellite. Plenty of room for four people!
The veranda included two comfortable chairs and a small table for drinks. Safe for children and not a lot of wind to worry about.
ACTIVITIES ONBOARD
Activities onboard included something for everyone: family entertainment, comedy acts, piano bar, disco dancing, three separate pools (young kids, middle kids and adults only).
The Personal Navigator is the best resource for onboard activities. It can be found in your stateroom or guest services.
Service was exceptional - international crew members - friendly all the time.
What would we do differently next time? Not much, maybe cruise on the sister ship, the "Wonder".
We recommend this cruise to FAMILIES - although we saw many older couples, singles, etc. I would still recommend this cruise to families with children between the ages of 4 to 14.
The night-time shows in the Walt Disney Theatre were top-notched. They spare no expense for a grand finale with special effects and ways to get the audience to participate.
CONS:
The Children's Menu always included sides like FRENCH FRIES and MIXED VEGETABLES - no fruit unless we asked for it. What kid likes frozen mixed vegetables?? French fries with Macaroni and Cheese??
Ports of Call not always accomodating to FAMILIES.
KEY WEST is made for single adults - shops have drug paraphernalia (bongs and pipes) in the windows and bars with loud music.
GRAND CAYMAN has one museum worth visiting (Cayman Islands National Museum), but the shops are mostly jewelry stores - need to hire a taxi to get around and there are not set fares - very expensive.
COZUMEL is the same way. Crummy stores and merchandise with no price tags - one has to like to 'haggle' to buy something.
CASTAWAY CAY - unless one gets off the boat right at 9:00 am, the day is too short. They close the beach at 3:30 pm. Not long enough to have a fun FULL DAY.
