| stepharoonie's Full Review: Disney Wonder |
Disney Cruise Line blows all other family type cruising experiences literally out of the water. I can not stress enough to you that you should DEFINTELY take a cruise with them at least once in your life!
Being a native Central Floridian, Ive come to love all things Disney. When I was younger, my family and I took a trip to the Bahamas on Premiere Cruise Lines (aka The Big Red Boat) based on the fact that Disney was the official sponsor of the cruise line. While there were some Disney characters on board, the interaction with them was minimal and it was just like any other cruise ship out there. My parents were extremely disappointed and I would not take another cruise until 1999, at which time was on the Disney Wonder.
I have now been on four Disney Wonder three day cruises and have loved them all. Each time that I go on one, I am amazed at the appearance of the ship. The Wonder always appears to look brand spankin new no matter how many people may have just walked through it. The décor is stunning and while in the atrium, you sometimes forget that you are not in a hotel but actually out at sea; you are reminded only by the slight swaying of the ship, or by glancing out of a porthole window.
The rooms on the Wonder (and the Magic) are some of the largest staterooms in the cruising industry. We have always been lucky enough to be upgraded to a higher room than what we originally paid for. Twice I have stayed in a room with an oversized porthole window, once with a Navigators Verandah and once with a regular glass Verandah. My recommendation for getting upgraded for free would be to book early and think of pixie dust. We were very lucky to have this happen each time that we have cruised!
Have two bathrooms in the cabin is wonderful. While one person is in the shower in one bathroom, the other can use the toilet or sink in the other bathroom without disturbing the person in the shower. Its an interesting concept and wonderful if youre in a bit of a rush to get to an excursion and need to get ready.
The beds are extremely comfortable. It does take a little getting used to at first because of the rocking of the boat, but you eventually feel like you are sleeping on a water bed. The pillows are very soft and the linens have always been immaculate whenever we have gone.
I even love their shampoo and conditioner! They recently switched to H20s seaweed moisturizing shampoo and conditioner and I have purchased bigger bottles on the H20 website for my husband because he liked them so much. The bottles you receive in your stateroom are oversized travel packages and the room attendants will happily give you more for free upon your request.
The food is amazing and delicious. Anything you can possibly think of or dream of is made available to you. Hungry for lunch at 11 a.m. while lounging by the pool? You have the option to go to the buffet, or grab a hot dog from Plutos Dog house, or a wrap from the sandwich counter. Want to have two desserts with dinner? Your servers wont even bat an eye if you ask for something that would normally raise eyebrows in a normal restaurant, and will happily bring you as many dishes that you would like to try. Want to have dinner without the kids in a romantic setting? They even have an adults only restaurant (for a $10 fee per person) that will allow you to eat to your hearts content.
The three day cruise takes you to Nassau on the second day and Castaway Cay, Disneys private island on the third day. Out of these four trips that I have taken with Disney Cruise Line, there was only one time where we missed Castaway Cay due to high winds. I will admit that this is the ONLY time that the cruise has ever disappointed me because we were really not offered too many adult activities during the day onboard the ship.
I can take or leave Nassau. After being there a total of six times in my life now (four with Disney, one with Premiere and one with Carnival), I think I would probably just opt to stay on board and lounge on the pool deck or go watch a movie.
What makes the entire cruise is your day at Castaway Cay. It is absolutely stunning and is jam packed with activities such as snorkeling, banana boat riding, stingray adventure, and more. There is an all you can eat bar-b-que place near the family beach where you can stuff yourself with hamburgers, hotdogs, chicken, salad, cookies and even chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream. There is a place that offers the same spread on the adult side, Serenity Bay.
Of course, Disney caters to the kids 100%. There are free kids clubs with free beepers and they offer many activities such as cookies baking, flubber making, and Captain Hook chasing good times. If you choose to put your kids in one of the clubs while at Castaway Cay, you can do so and they can participate in scavenger hunts, a whale dig and a supervised swim time.
There is just too much to talk about with Disney Cruise Line and the Disney Wonder. I LOVE IT. I would always happily recommend this cruise and this particular three day one; Im hoping to eventually take a seven day on the Magic!
