On my list of places that I would love to visit, the Panama Canal was never at the top of the list. In fact, I don't remember it even being on the list; however, the opportunity came for a cruise on Princess and not being the foolish sort, we went. Besides, it was on my husband's top 10. Just before our departure date, we were able to watch the segment on the building of the canal on the History Channel and at that point, I became very excited about going.
As usual, we were not at all disappointed with out stateroom (mini-suite with balcony). The room was large enough to be comfortable and current decor was attractive. I have been on other cruise lines with balcony rooms and the rooms were either not as good of a floor plan or they were smaller and there were some cruise ships with a decor from the 70's. I have never had a bad Princess cruise. Our room stewards were wonderful people and getting to know them and our dining room personnel was another bonus to this cruise. I have only had good relations with any of the crew on a Princess ship. Talking to the cabin personnel or the dining staff really can be enlightening. They can make you understand that coming from the United States is a privilege.
The locking into the canal and then into the lake was exciting especially after watching the History Channel segment. We kept saying how amazing it was and talking about the many who died trying to complete that dream. My big regret was that we were not on a trip that completed the entire canal. Maybe someday we will have an opportunity to return for the full passage.
This was a 10-day cruise and consequently there were many older people. From other cruises that I have been on, it seemed as if there were many more people over the age of 70 than on a regular cruise. The only problem with that is that some of these oldsters have the impression that since they have less time left on the earth, they should be moved to the front of any line. Not being one of the quiet and retiring species, I couldn't not express my opinion that even though you're 80+ manners are still important. Everyone around seemed to agree.
All in all it was a beautiful cruise and I would go back again and again. The ports that we stopped at were also very interesting and one of my favorites was the San Blas islands. An amazing view of the lives of others. Not to be missed!
