| swgrl's Full Review: Dawn Princess |
First of all, allow me to be blunt in saying that epinions needs to get their facts straight. The Dawn Princess sails from Seward, Alaska and Vancouver throughout the month of August. With that aside, allow me to review our seven day cruise through the inside passage.
Alaska by far is the most beautiful place I have ever been, unlike the lower 48, its beauty lies in the pristine quality of the Alaskan wilderness. With the Dawn Princess, you can view the thick evergreen forests traveling from Vancouver to Seward, or vice versa. The ports of call between these two cities are; Skagway, Juneau, and Ketchikan. Prior to the cruise, Princess cruise line sends you a booklet with approximately 20 excursions for each port. The pamphlet includes blurbs and pictures of land, water, and air excursions. The day trips that we took (which were excellent) included horseback riding, and biking and Skagway, white-water rafting in Juneau and kayaking in Ketchikan.
If staying on the ship is more up your alley, many daily activities are offered. There are movies, live shows, pianists, and performers in each of the numerous lounges. For passengers over 21 there is a nightclub, and casino on deck 8. There is also a gym with daily exercise classes, a sauna, 3 pools, 5 hot tubs, a bar, grill and buffet on the uppermost decks.
The price of most food and activities is included in your cruise package. However, you must pay for excursions, spa services (i.e. massages, manicures, and facials), soda, and alcoholic beverages. Overall the service was excellent, and there were several dining options around the clock, in order to accommodate everyone. Every night of the cruise there was a different menu in the dining room, and for the most part it was very good. The best part was that you could order as much food as desired, and not worry about the price.
There are several types of rooms onboard the ship, all include a shower, toilet, sink, closet, tv, and small freezer. I attributed the limited room size to the fact that space on the ship is obviously limited, and that is not the cruise line's fault. Honestly, it really didn't concern me that much because we were hardly ever in our cabin! The variety and abundant possibilities for entertainment were truly amazing.
All told, Princess cruises was professional, and accommodating, and we enjoyed our cruise immensely. If you have the desire to see Alaska and quite a bit of spare change, the best way to go is by cruise through the inside passage(Southern Alaska).
