I have just returned home from a mediocre cruise on the Dawn Princess that sailed the Southern Caribbean from 12/9/00 - 12/116/00.
Although the public areas on the Dawn are really magnificent, the living areas (staterooms) are tiny! I had a cabin on the Aloha Deck (deck 11) with a balcony that was only 151 square feet. This tiny room was quite difficult for 2 people to share!
The food on the Dawn Princess is marginal, at best. There were several nights that I didn't even bother to eat my entree. On a more positive note, the soups were always top notch and the service in both the dining room and by the room stewards were wonderful! The theme evenings are very downplayed - for British night, as an example, there were United Kingdom flags on the tables and Yorkshire Pudding on the menu - that's all! The 24 hour buffet is a joke. If you are hungry for more than dessert after 10 pm, you had better look elsewhere for food. The buffet had only cakes and pastries which were not even good! There is no waiter assisted service at the buffet...be prepared to hold your own plate as you search for a table.
The health club facilities were very good as were the services at the spa.
Since the crowd on board tends to be older, there seems to be a lack of both activity and music around the pool. One day, they even had to cancel the pool Olympics for lack of participation! I checked the disco several evenings and found no more than 2 people in there!
The ports that we visited (St. Thomas, St. Kitts, Martinique, Isla Margarita and Curacao) were all wonderful and were the majority of the tours that we took. Getting on and off the ship - either by tender or gangplank - was always very well run.
All in all, if you are looking for an exciting vacation with superior food and acommodations, I would not recommend the Dawn Princess. If you're satisfied with not doing much in a quiet atmosphere, this may be the perfect ship for you!
