I cannot say enough about this beautiful ship and ports, however, I will try to keep this to a minimum.
As a veteran cruiser of 20 + cruises, this was our first to Alaska. We chose the Legend because of positive experiences from friends who had sailed her before. We were told that the ship was lovely, food and service very good, and most importantly to me, the entertainment excellent. We were not disappointed to say the least.
Friday, Vancouver: When we boarded in Vancouver we were delighted by the efficiency of the RCI staff. Within minutes, we were on the ship, directed to our balcony cabin and heading on our tour of the ship. She is lovely, and in wonderful condition. We have cruised on various lines, and I must admit that Royal Caribbean truly pays attention to detail, the public rooms are comfortable and inviting.
Wonderful piano music was playing in the Centrum and we chose to enjoy a drink from the Champagne Bar and listen for awhile.
We left Vancouver and sailed toward our adventure, excited for what would await us around the bend.
Evening Entertainment: An entertaining welcome aboard show, a ladder balancing act, quite fun. Also on the bill was a small demonstration of the revue dancers and singers that we enjoyed very much.
Saturday, Sea Day: Our first day was a day at sea, and we just relaxed and took in the ship. We had met our table mates the night before and made instant friends with them and we all decided to spend the day getting to know one another. We found so many things in common and made plans to take shore excursions together. I do believe that this is one of the wonderful things about cruising, new friendships. We all went to the Captain's Welcome Aboard Reception and then had a delicious dinner.
Evening Entertainment: Revue Show "Make Mine Broadway". It was an excellent production, well choreographed, sung and performed by the troupe. I am a entertainment booking agent and I was impressed by this energetic group of performers. I might mention the theatre is very well done, not a bad seat in the house. After the show we went to the "Almost Original Village People" presentation by the Cruise Staff and this is not to be missed, it was hysterical.
Sunday, Ketchikan: We walked around the town and explored on our own. We did not have any shore excursions planned.
Evening Entertainment: Michael Eric Hall, a singer and comedian, again a good show, talented performer.
Monday, Skagway: Glacier landing tour. The tour was probably the highlight of the cruise and an amazing site and experience, Alaska at it's best. You cannot imagine the scope of the glacier until you are standing on it.
Evening Entertainment: Revue show, "Rhythm Nation" Probably one of the best shows I have seen afloat. Excellent, unusual concept.
Tuesday,Juneau: White Pass Railroad trip. The scenery is spectacular and the story behind the building of the rail and the Gold Rush makes it all come to life, Highly recommended.
Evening Entertainment: Joey Van, I have seen him before, and the show was the same as the last time I saw him. Needs new material.
We ended up in the Schooner Lounge enjoying the piano music of Anne-Tina.
Wednesday,Sitka: We tendered into Sitka and just explored and shopped. We took in the Eagle Rehab center, a must see, in my opinion. Lovely area.
Evening Entertainment: Revue show "Jump, Jivin, Swing" I felt as if I was back in the day's of the Big Band. Again, well done, extremely energetic and talented dancers and singers. After the show, we attended the Love and Marriage Game Show, it is quite something what people reveal, very funny.
Thursday, Hubbard Glacier. Unfortunately we had very bad fog and it was disappointing not to see much of it. The fog did lift a bit and we saw the glacier from far away, but we all understand that Alaska is Alaska and you get what you get, otherwise the weather on this cruise was very very good. We won a little money at BINGO, attended a backstage tour and lecture which I found very informative explaining how the revue shows are developed, how the dancers and singers are hired, and what goes into the audition process.
Evening Entertainment: I have to mention a show that was performed in the afternoon by the musical director Charles Brunner,it was excellent. He performed classics on piano such as Beethoven's 5th in a disco style, Hungarian Rhapsody, Rhapsody in Blue, all accompanied by the Legend Of The Seas Orchestra. I enjoyed it very much.
Overall, I think this was one of the best cruises I have taken. Service was excellent, the crew very friendly, ports interesting and the entertainment outstanding. My only complaint was that the food was somewhat inconsistent, good, but not particularly notable. We would like to cruise this ship again on it's New Zealand itinerary and are looking into it. We were rather surprised by the amount of young people on this cruise, expecting a somewhat older crowd, that was not to be. We are in our 40's and found ourselves among our peers. One of our table mates had a child 9 years old who raved about the children's program. I highly recommend this ship.
