| pitapuppy's Full Review: Royal Caribbean Legend of the Seas |
We took the Legend to Alaska, from Vancouver, BC at the end of August...cost $3200 for the two of us. It was worth twice that! Royal Caribbean is always a first class cruise, with somewhat larger rooms, ever larger ships, and wonderful itineraries. We upgraded for the first time to a larger outside stateroom with a private veranda, and couldn't have been happier with our choice. While I genuinely believe it would not have been necessary for our Eastern and Western Caribbean cruises, it turned out to be the icing on the cake for Alaska!
There are several reasons...when one travels to where it is warm, there seems to be a more pronounced "party" atmosphere, with the emphasis on food, drink, dancing, and meeting people...hence, little time is spent in your cabin. An Alaskan cruise is entirely different, with more emphasis on the amazing beauty of the sea and mountains, the abundance of incredible wildlife, the wonder of the ice floes, and the colorful history of that exciting region.
All our afternoons at sea were spent whale watching, or spotting eagles, porpoise, salmon, seals, sea lions, otters, bears, moose, goats, etc. The shore excursions were moderately priced to pricey, and of amazing variation! We took the the train from Skagway to Canada following the original trail. We chased whales in Juneau and got fabulous photos. We shopped for wonderful native art in Haines...and visited a wonderful Indian reservation. Our trip was 8 days, and not nearly long enough! My greatest coup was finding an unbelievable cribbage board carved out of a fossilized walrus jaw.!
I can promise you that this trip will change you forever! The balance of total luxury on board (as only RCCL can do it) and the raw, primitive beauty of Alaska cannot help but heighten your appreciation for the wonders of nature and the joys of luxury.
