The Mandalay was the first ship my wife and I sailed on in this fleet of sailing ships. And what a beautiful experience it was. We sailed from Antigua to Grenada stopping off at such islands as Isles de Saintes, Nevis, Bequie, St.Lucia and St.Vincent. Hardly heard of these islands? That's because most of them don't have facilities to dock huge cruise ships. But the Mandalay and her sister ships can give you a look at these small or out-of-the-way islands you would otherwise miss.
The sailing experience itself with the raising of sails to the tune "Amazing Grace" is really magical. You begin to feel part of the ship from the first time you take your shoes on and wander up and down the decks. Everything is casual and friendly. Take the helm or help raise the sails, explore a sleepy island of just kick back in your bunk as the ship rocks you to sleep.
We'll always sail with Windjammer every chance we get. The image that stays with me when I think of this experience is the view of our beautiful Mandalay framed by the twisted limbs of a tree on the road to the fort on Isles de Saintes. It was our home at sea not so far away.
