Botswana, formerly Bechuanaland, is not only Africa's most stable and democratic nation but the continent's finest safari destination. I recently returned from a week-long safari in Botswana, on which some friends and I fished, hunted birds, and photographed wildlife.
We had selected Johna Calitz Safaris out of Maun, Botswana, because of this outfit's impressive reputation (jhunt@info.bw). We flew into Johannesburg, South Africa, and spent the night in the excellent Afton Guest House B&B, which is 5 minutes from the airport. The next morning we flew 90 minutes to Maun on Air Botswana (a Fokker F-28 jet), where we were met by the staff of Johan Calitz Safaris. Quickly ushered through Customs with no problems (because the safari company had all the required permits right there), we were soon off to our first camp, where we hunted birds. The camp is a luxury tented camp (all Calitz camps are) with en suite baths, gourmet food and wine (plus spirits and beer), an attentive staff, and everything else we were promised. The birds included 3 species of doves and two species of francolin. The hunting was the best I have ever experienced, and I have been hunting for nearly 40 years. At night, elephants would come to the watering hole in front of the dining room/bar, which was great to experience.
Our second camp was near the Mababe Depression in a more arid region. The camp was terrific, of course, and the hunting equally good. Three species of doves, three species of francolins, one species of sand grouse, and one species of guinea fowl were on order. We also had great game viewing, with elephants, giraffes, hyenas, gemsbok, eland, steinbok, bustards, eagles, impala, Cape buffalo, and lots more to see.
Our third and final camp was in the Okavango Delta, which is a massive wetland teeming with fish and wildlife. The fishing was good for tigerfish, African pike (one bit me), and all sorts of bream, some of which grow to huge size. The camp was set amid huge old trees. At night, lions would roar just outside of camp, leopards would patrol by, and birds would squawk like mad in the morning. The baboons were entertaining, too.
Botswana is affordable, too, with a Johan Calitz luxury hunting and fishing and photography safari costing only $650/day, which includes all accommodations while on safari, food, drinks (including alcohol), guides, trackers, professional hunters, ground and air transportation (air charters between camps), park entry fees, and more.
You can arrange your safari to include hunting, fishing, and photography, or any combination there of.
Botswana is the best.
