| grahamjohn's Full Review: Seychelles |
I'm an English travel agent, and therefore I am one of those 'poor souls' who have to endure fact finding missions to exotic destinations. I have favourite places for 'doing' holidays and favourite spots for relaxing - the Seychelles are top of the list for the latter. The sea is clear and warm, the beaches are soft white sand and there is no aggrivation from beach 'vendors' disturbing your peace. As the islands are small, there is little crime and you will generally feel very safe.
The main island of Mahe has the largest collection of hotels. My favourite smaller hotel is the Sunset Beach on the north west coast. It's small (30+ rooms) and has a bit of character. The reception area has an amazing collection of large ship models and cozy corners, and although the rooms are not luxurious they are cosy and well designed. No children under 12 - good idea for people like me whose babies have flown the nest. This makes it ideal for couples. There is a small pool and a sweet liitle beach.
If you like larger hotels or are taking the family along then go for Le Meridian Fishermans Cove or if you can't get away from a Casino try the Plantation Club.My favourite day trip out of Mahe is 'Moyen Island' - A short boat trip from the harbour in Victoria, with a stop to feed the fishes and a short trip on a submersible, gets you onto Moyenne. It's owned by an eccentric Englishman, who lives there with his collection of giant tortoises, has two gorgeous little beaches, a great little reef for snorkelling, and a very edible BBQ - a great value day out.
You need to try a two centre, and PRASLIN is a great second island. It's only a short flight in a small 'prop' aircraft, but remember your luggage allowance is restricted on all inter-island flights. At the top end of the market I like the L'Archipel hotel.Laid back, great rooms, and they now have a pool (which they did not have when I visited).Middle of the road I would go for the Paradise Sun'-well designed rooms, nice atmosphere and one of the best beaches you will ever find. I also quite like the Indian Ocean Lodge (beware seaweed on the beach June-October).
In England we tend to look at the Seychelles an Mauritius as similar destinations - with the Seychelles having better scenery and Mauritius better hotels. You can't change the scenery, but Seychelles are certainly catching up on quality hotels.
