Actually, the world's largest McDonald's no longer stands in Beijing, since its lease expired and the city gave the place to an Asian developer instead. The spot, in the busy Wanfujing shopping district, is now being made into a huge shopping center. There are complications though -- while excavating the foundation, ancient Chinese relics were found on the site. The ensuing battle between the obvious importance of preservation and the government-backed investor has been interesting, but not exactly a fair fight. Some relics are being preserved, but the Almighty Dollar (or Renminbi in this case) wins in the end.
