Re: Excellent epinion but the title... (Reply to this comment)

Thanks for your comments. I did not know that "inscrutable" had been used as a derogatory term. I used the term because many Westerners are not familiar with Asia or Asian cultures, and no offense was intended. I will change the title. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.

Excellent epinion but the title... (Reply to this comment)
by smiles33
...makes me pause because "inscrutable Chinese" (or sometimes the phrase used "chink" or some other slur) has long been perpetuated in the "West" as a form of racist, condescending dehumanization. It was most popularly used in the late 19th century by newspapers condemning the Chinese laborers imported by landowners as a source of cheap labor. And it also was part of the dialogue that resulted in the passage of the Chinese Exclusion Act--forbidding Chinese immigrants other than diplomats, merchants, and students from coming to the United States. This is the only American law to specifically target a racial/ethnic group and forbid their entrance to the United States.
While I do understand that you have a genuine interest in Asia, I can't help but feel uncomfortable with the choice of title. Just my two cents as an American of Chinese descent (born and raised here in the U.S.).
Sincerely,
Anna

Very thorough review... I've been to Hong Kong twice but have not been to China, yet. When I go, I'll keep your review in mind!
