Traveling in India can be a very rewarding experience or a very punishing one. You have to be mentally as well as physically prepared and ready for this venture. If you want a nice, relaxing, troublefree experience then this is not the best place for you to go.
But if it is a whole lot of varied, exotic spectacles and experiences you want and if you are prepared to pay for it in terms of a bit of stress, pollution and all those things that go with traveling in an overpopulated developing country, then I must say that there is no other place better than India.
I have had some really touching experiences while traveling in India and I will forever be a fan of India. My trip took me to the state of Rajasthan in Northern India and the vibrant city of Bombay. These two places are a must if you want to see and feel the flavor of India.
The city of Bombay is a good starting place for the trip because it gives you a small dose of what is India and what you can expect from it while you are still in the relatively familiar and comfortable confines of a modern metropolis. Here you will be able to see people from all over India with their surprisingly different cultures and ways of life intermingled, to give a very unique and very Indian air to it. ( Beware of scamsters, though )
Which brings me to rajasthan. And let me tell you, this place can be very romantic. Its highly recommended for a trip for couples. Its seeped in an amazing, colorful history which has lost none of its shade. The palaces here are beautiful and there are a lot of them. If you stay in a plush hotel(which wont be that expensive, around 75 USD a day) you can have a pretty good time over here. The cultural activities organized by most hotels are a very good experience to have. But I suggest, you just wonder around in the cities and villages here with a guide or on your own and you will get to see some amazing sites and get some real experiences. Places to go are Jaipur, Jaiselmer, Jodhpur, bikaner, ajmer and fatehpur sikri. Yep, lots of them, all worth visiting.
There are a whole lot of places to visit in India of every kind catering to all sorts of people but wherever you go you will have to face a very slow bureaucracy, beggars, filth and diarrhea. So be prepared for that and go only if you can rise above it and are able to enjoy the kind of beauty that this land offers.
