Weird, yet wonderful .. and expensive. To a Westerner, the hostess club
is an exercise in understanding the Japanese way. Think of them as generally very small bars, where you are waited upon by charming young hostesses. In the US we go straight from bars to topless joints, in Japan, the hostess clubs fill that void. The hostess will sit next to you, keep your drink filled (usually bourbon on the rocks) and
simply engage you in conversation, laugh and smile with you and attempt to get you to make a fool of yourself singing karaoake.
You definitely want to accompanied by a Japanese business associate, who can handle the finer points of etiquette and payment (you're basically charged by the hour, not the drink). You'll usually find they will take you to a club where they are already known. Often they have a special bottle of whiskey stored at the club for entertaining their corporate guests. Its also important to point out that although the hostess may touch you, put her head on your shoulder etc. don't even think about sex. Thats not what these bars are about.
You will most times find at least one hostess who can speak some English. She will usually be happy to practice her English and will try to teach you Japanese. One final warning is that the Japanese love to smoke. The bar will be very, very smokey and expect your clothes to smell for days afterwards.
