This is a very helpful, important piece of information. I live in Japan, and still found it useful. By the way, Citibank operates the same all over Japan but there are still only a few branches and all of them are in the major cities.

This is incredibally useful information. I would never have thought that a person could get different rates with traveler's checks. Most people bring traveler's checks on vacation, but this makes it especially important.
Thanks for sharing this.

A must-read before going to Japan (Reply to this comment)

Very informative review. Although, I had a difficult time finding ATMs in Tokyo that accepted American (or British) credit cards. We finally found one the next to last day of our trip (we took a picture of the thing). Luckily, I had a cash advance from my company and was able to squander that for most of the week and pay them back in British pounds (living in England at the time). Great information.

I lived in Japan for three years, and the thing that most shocked Americans was the way the Japanese deal with money...cash in
Japan is customary, checks, credit cards, etc. while growing in acceptance, are not as popular as cash. Great job. Howard
