| bcchng's Full Review: Georgetown - Penang Island |
Penang is a tropical island situated near Equator. It is also a state of Malaysia. In case you do not know where is Malaysia. It is a tropical country in South East Asia. It maybe quite hot for visitors from temperate countries. But the weather is quite cool in between September and November. However, be ready for a lot of rains.
A lot of informations about Penang can be founded in a travel book about Malaysia. Places to stay, to eat and to visit that can be found in these books are not going to be mentioned here again. I would like to give some tips on how you can truely enjoy the way Penangites (as most of the locals called themselves) enjoy Penang.
Ask any Malaysian about which state offers the most varieties and delicous food in Malaysia besides Kuala Lumpur, I am sure they will tell you it's Penang, the heaven of hawkers' food. You can find a lot of food courts here even at midnight 3.00am. Most tourists like to go to Gurney Drive for local food because the tour guides bring them there. However, the best Penang food is not at Gurney Drive. One of my favourites is at Jalan Tanjong Tokong, near Penang Chinese Swimming Club. You just can't resist the temptation of nice food there such as 'Char Koay Teow' (Fried shreded paste with prawn and dried meat) , Fried Oyster, Prawn Noodle, 'Lor Bak' (something like Tim Sum), 'Mee Jawa' (Tomato Source Noodle)....... and 'Penang Laksa' (Prawn paste noodle).
The best 'Laksa' you can find in Penang is at the market of Ayer Itam. Somewhere near the tourist hot spot, 'Kek Lok Si' chinese temple. Besides that, I also enjoy 'Ais Kacang' (Grinded ice with syrup, corn, red bean, peanut) at the top of Penang Hill especially after 2 hours of climbing to reach there (of cause most tourist prefer to take cable car to reach there). You can also find the best seafood here in Penang with reasonable price at Batu Maung. The restaurent is just near the fisherman pier there.
My favourite 'Char Koay Teow' stall is in a shop at somewhere near city stadium. It is just opposite the post office at Jalan Ayer Itam. For Prawn Noodle, I prefer the Prawn Noodle hawker at the market of Batu Lanchang. They only open their business at night.
If you ever visit Penang, do not forget to visit these places for the best hawkers' food. (Too bad I am not in Penang now)
