At 3 months into our trip around the world, we made it to the incredible country of Burma. After landing in Rangoon and taking the bus from hell to Mandalay, we decided to fly to Bagan. Arriving in the evening, we were struck by the amazing sight of huge gold pagodas, lit up along the Irwaddy river. We stayed the night outside of Bagan, at a guesthouse set across from an unbelievable lit up gold pagoda & ate at a fantastic outdoor restaurant.
The next morning, we set out by horse cart, packed with smiling, curious monks into Bagan. The monks got off at their various pagodas & we were left with our horse cart driver, "Miu" and his horse "Marona." We spent the day exploring the ancient stupas & pagodas that make up Bagan. The village was deserted of tourists & was teeming with marooned robe monks. Miu took us to a dirt floor "restaurant" where 3 generations of Burmese women beamed at us as we tryed their foods. A cross between, Thai & Indian, Burmese food is fantastic & mostly vegetarian.
Our guesthouse for the night was at the base of a huge white stupa with a lit up gold Buddha inside. It's called the "Piu" guesthouse & is run by a wonderful family.
Bagan is made up of 5-thousand ancient temples & used to be the old capitol of Burma. Most of the huge temples, pagodas & stupas have been restored & hold massive gold Buddhas inside. Its a fantastic, magical place.
