My mother and I traveled to Thailand during the Songkran water festival in 1998. On our way back to Ayuthia, we stayed at the Rose Garden Hotel, in Nakorn Pathom, near Bangkok. Once again, I was amazed at the high quality of accommodations for a small budget of $65 per night.
We literally could have never left the compound during our stay near Bangkok. This 175-room resort hotel is located along the riverside. All 75 acres are landscaped with tropical gardens and lawns. I believe that we heard swans and peacocks in the nearby lake. Along the lake, rowing and paddle boats were available.
Every day that we were there, we ate at one of the 7 restaurants and bars that were available on site.
The ozone treated swimming pool was a refreshing relief from the stifling heat of Southeast Asia. It was large and very clean. Ice cold drinks were nearby, while we were floating in the pool. There is also one of the finest 18 hole, par 72, and championship golf courses on site. Being a not-so-good, but avid golfer, I could appreciate the manicured course. For tennis buffs, there were tennis courts available too.
We attended the Thai Cultural Show that was located at the resort. The show was billed as an extravaganza. There were over 150 performers including Thai boxing, traditional dancing, elephant processions, a ‘traditional’ Thai town, and plenty of shopping. I found the show a bit too commercialized after visiting the authentic towns up north. The performers were dancing with blank stares on their faces, as if they had done the same routine hundreds of times. Still, if you don’t get a chance to visit Northern Thailand, you should go to the show.
Finally, while we were at the resort, we attended a Thai cooking class, held by our host and guide, Tommy Tang. The informative class was conducted on a floating barge that was tied up to the dock, on the river. We also had an impromptu sunset cruise along the river.
The only drawback about the resort was the ever-present smell of pigs. Apparently, the town of Nakom Pathom is the pig farm capital of Thailand. When I go back to Thailand, I will be sure to stay at this hotel again.
