Okay I had to choke back some tears of laughter when I saw the description of Thailand started with "so if you're interested in ruins, temples and deserted cities, this is the place to go.". Okay sure Thailand has it's fare share of old temples and deserted temples. Deserted Cities...not sure about that one, people still live in Sukothai.
Thailand is more than just a temple romp, it is the centre of Asia, people from all over the world pass through, visit, work in and live in Thailand making it one of Asias most multi-cultural countries. In Bangkok you can get any kind of food your stomache desires be it an Mongolian BBQ or a KFC Chicken Burger. Discos and theatre abound and the city is alive 24 hours a day, music, food, action, sports non stop. You just have to get over the fact that there is also Traffic 24 hours a day, but with the opening of the new Sky Train even the traffic is becoming less of a thing to worry about.
Getting bored of the hectic pace of the capital, head up North to the mountains, South or South East to the beaches, West to explore the Burmese border (take a flak jacket), or North East to explore Esan and the heart of Thailand. Okay don't get too drawn in by that Heart of Thailand stuff, Esan isn't a mega tourist trap, once you've done the elephants in Surin and Phanom Rung in Buri Ram the only thing left is to head straight North to the Mekhong river. Zip across into Laos for a day.
The North is Mountain country, Trekking, rafting, caving, climbing and all those active sports. Plus a fair number of meet the locals, all dressed up in national tribal dress to dance for the tourists. Okay it's not quite that bad...most of the time... Chiang Mai is the best starting destination for any exploration of the North and has its own food, markets and life style.
Beaches abound to the South and South East, with Phuket, Samui, Samed and various other Islands claiming their share of the tourist market, and of course theirs always Pattaya if you're just in Thailand to get to know the local girls, hard to believe their still trying to promote Pattaya as an ideal family resort!! Stay away there are a thousand better places to go in Thailand. Looking for less exploited islands head to Trat province and visit all the islands off the Cambodian coast. Coastal sports are all the rage in the Southern Islands, sea Kayaks, parasailing, diving and so on, its all there for the doing.
Temple Rompers, Bangkok, Sukothai, Ayutthaya and Buri Ram will certainly give you your fill of temples, Phanom Rung in Buri Ram being my favourite by far. The Bangkok temples are best described as gaudy.
In Summary Thailand is a great place for any one to visit of any age and of any, the people are great, the food the best in the world...no matter what your interests you'll find them somewhere in Thailand...with the possible exception of cross country skiing.
