The Ancient town of Hoi An is the jewel of Vietnam. We stayed at the Hoi An Hotel, the largest hotel in town. This was a US Marine base during the Vietnam War. The hotel restaurant was a good place to eat and to experience traditional musical performances. There are many good places to eat in Hoi An. A specialty of Hoi An is Cao Lau, a noodle dish, which we ate at the market in Hoi An by the Bach Dang river. The market was a great place to take people photos of vendors selling, eating, playing cards, and posing for us.
Some places in Hoi An look exactly as they did a hundred years ago. The best way to see Hoi An is by foot, bicycle, or cyclo. Some things you will want to see are the Japanese Covered Bridge (check out the monkeys on one side and dogs on the other guarding this bridge), the many Chinese Temples in town, each with unique, spectacular carvings, Ba Le Well where the water for Cao Lau comes from, the Hoi An Market, and scenes along the river. Wander thru the typical Viet Cong War Monuments around Hoi An.
If you are into buying paintings, there are art sellers everywhere. For a couple of dollars I bought two paintings which I love and are on my living room wall. Almost everyone who comes into my house makes a favorable comment about these paintings. If you are looking to chill for a couple of days, I highly recommend Hoi An for its charm and relaxed atmosphere.
