If you are going to be in Antigua on a Sunday you owe it to yourself to visit Shirley Heights.
A Little History
Shirley Heights was named for Sir Thomas Shirley, Governor of the island in the late 1700's. He decided to place cannon on this bluff overlooking English Harbour in order to protect the harbour. English Harbour was an important repair shipyard for the English Navy in the Caribbean.
Sunday Barbecue
Now, on Sunday afternoons, Shirley Heights becomes the home of one of the best parties on the island. Great barbecue is available for a reasonable price, along with beer and soft drinks. A variety of local bands play all afternoon and into the evening. Trust me when I say that hearing the "William Tell Overture" played by a steel drum band is truly a memorable experience.
Be sure to get to Shirley Heights before sundown. Not only does it get pretty crowded, but you don't want to miss the view. From the parapet you can overlook English Harbour, and really see how important these fortifications were to the security of the harbour and repair yard.
This is the only place in the world, overlooking English Harbour, that I have ever been able to see the green flash at sundown. (For those of you who haven't heard of the green flash, it is a phenomenon that occurs when the sun touches the horizon under certain meteorological conditions. It is truly a sight to behold.)
