A beautiful island situated at the Southern end of the Caribbean, Aruba is a paradise. The weather is always beautiful and relatively dry, the people are more friendly than perhaps any island I have ever been to, and the prices are reasonable and cheap. I traveled there last spring break with my dad and a good friend of mine from high school, and we all had an incredible time.
Oranjestad, the heart of the island, is a beautiful city that has not completely sold itself out to tourism like the capitals of many other islands. While there are some signs of American influence (a Wendy's where you can get served on drive thru by jumping up and down, a McDonald's, a few brand-name stores, and the typical flea market for the cruising types), Oranjestad, and the island as a whole for that matter, still seems to live the relaxed life that we all picture of a Caribbean paradise. The workers, the police, and pretty much everyone there is friendly and welcoming. While some are a little too friendly (like the guy who kept asking me and my friend if we wanted to buy a little "smokey, smokey, magic plant"), overall it is a wonderful atmosphere.
When in the city, I suggest you try to avoid the tourist traps and soak up the atmosphere. Rather than going to the Sonesta big and scary casino, try the one across the street where more of the people of the island go. (While we may have referred to it as the "Dirt Casino," it is really a clean and cool place) There, we built a really strong repoire with the wait staff, who were always giving a drink and talking to us. I know this is there job, but it seemed they still did much more than asked of them to make us feel welcome. This sentiment existed all over.
While our room was not that great at the Divi Aruba Resort, it was a great all-inclusive where many beautiful Dutch women (great accent) and others helped us along the way. It was situated close enough to the city, such that every night, after an evening of gambling and the bar scene, we could walk the mile or two (there were cabs as well) safely back to our hotel, enjoying the wonderful weather, and chill on the beach singing songs and having an excellent time.
All in all, Aruba is a great place to get away from what many expect of their Spring Break trips. There is a lot to do, very pleasant people, beautiful beaches, and a generally great atmosphere which reminded me of the add I heard long ago ("Aruba, where you never have to hear the TOOT of the angry horn").
It is truly a great destination for one and all.
