I just got back from Cable Beach- Nassau, Bahamas a few days ago and my only regret about the vacation is that I am not still there.
My boyfriend and I stayed at Nassau Beach Hotel- which is along the Cable Beach Strip. Our room had a beautiful ocean view. We started and ended each day by going out on the balcony and taking it all in.
There are 6 restaurants and 2 bars in the hotel- so you need not travel far, all-inclusive packages are available. We wanted to experiment a little more so although we tried most of the hotel food, we mostly went out to eat. By far the best hotel restaurant we ate at was the Beef Cellar- where you pick out your fish, steak or chicken and it's cooked on the table right in front of you.
The best restaurant for entertainment while you eat is the Blue Marlin (only night shows, should make reservations). You can enjoy Action who does the Flaming Limbo (also a lcoal celeb that you can see driving around in his labeled car or speed boat); a steel drum band; a reenaction of Junkanoo (you'll quickly learn it's similar to Mardi Gras not wild tho); and a native dancer. It has audience participation and is also great for kids.
Nassau beach had two pools- but the Marriott next door allows you to use theirs or their hot tub- which we did. We also used the Marriott for it's casino, and it's spa where you can get massages, workout, sit in a steam room, jacuzzi, sauna, or more.
Activities: jetskiing was expensive ($120 for an hour per machine) but FUN. There is also snorkeling, banana boats, paddling, parasailing, scuba diving, sailing, and more. It is also easily accessible outside the hotel too.
There are also many ticket vendors who let you in on what's going on: hot clubs, booze cruises, shows, etc.
I went to the Waterloo and the Zoo- 2 night clubs on the island. Both were worth going to- but not the greatest night life scenes I've ever experienced. I had a hard time dealing with the DJ at the Zoo who interupted the songs every 2 minutes to say something only a spring-breaker would enjoy i.e. "If you have big "breasts" scream..."
But both clubs offer different rooms, to chill, sit, dance, hear different music so you'll like them enough.
One of the days we went on the Booze cruise- it was 5 hours that included all you can drink, snorkleing, a trip to a secluded beach, and lunch (not in this order). It was a nice day out- but only recommended for the college or 20-something generation.
By far the best thing we did- was to go to Dolphin Encounters on Blue Lagoon Island- where we swam with trained dolphins. We got to kiss them, hug them, dance with them, have them hurdle us, and to do the 25 mph push (where they push you by your feet) It was honestly one of the best experiences of my life.
Another must see is Ardastra Zoo. It is small- but like all the native Bahamamians- the animals are very friendly. A lot of the animals, including a very large pot-bellied pig are allowed to wander the zoo openly. And never have I liked birds in a zoo before this trip. The parrots we encountered not only were beautiful, they said "hi", let us pet them- in fact encouraged us petting them, and let us feed them. There is also an ok show where flamingos have been trained to respond to military commands- only plce in the world with trained flamingos- but like I said it was only OK.
I think I've summed up my stay in the Bahamas. One last thing to mention- expect to take taxis- but talk to the drivers- every one of them had a story that was interesting to listen to although hard to believe. It's nice to learn local legends.
Enjoy!
