Nassau- Not Worth Trip in winter or if you're from the west coast

Pros: Beautiful beaches and water WHEN the weather is good.
Cons: Incredibly expensive given the quality of the goods and the service; inconsistent weather in winter
The Bottom Line: Not worth it in the winter b\c of inconsistent weather; Not worth the trip if you're from the west coast.

Nassau is the biggest city on the most populous island in the Bahamas and it still felt like a very small city. This would probably be a very relaxing vacation when the weather is good. However, when the weather is average (i.e. not sunny as opposed to stormy), there is literally nothing to do but hang out in your hotel or gamble. The weather during the winter months is inconsistent. It could be sunny one week only to have the following week be cloudy and windy. This sucks if you happened to plan your vacation for the week when the weather is less than inviting.
The historic downtown area is rather small and there is no nightlife outside of the hotels themselves. The downtown area empties out pretty fast in the evening so even though the area is relatively crime free, it felt creepy to be only one walking around. Re: transportation, not really worth it to rent a car as parking is horrendous and there is a good taxi and bus system. However, beware that the buses don't run in the evening so you have to rely on taxi. This puts yet another obstacle to going out at night.
The prices were extremely high given that the food was only average. Also, the selection of fruit was pretty mediocre given that it is a tropical island. We ordered a fruit plate that actually only had oranges and grapefruit on it.
Also, the bahamas are not as lush as the pacific islands like Hawaii or Tahiti.
Overall, I could not recommend the Bahamas in the winter (weather too inconsistent) or to someone living on the west coast (Hawaii and Tahiti are much closer and have more to offer).
