My new husband and I decided to go to Nassau for our honeymoon in the middle of August 1999. We had a great time! We booked an all-inclusive 7-day stay at the Breezes Super Club resort. I highly recommend the all-inclusive route. We met people there who were staying in other hotels and resorts and found out we were definitely saving money by having our food (and all name brand drinks!) included in the price. The food was great and available close to 24 hours a day. At our resort, we had access to three meals a day (each served for at least 2 hours a piece) plus a pool side grill/snack shop. The bars were always open. The pool was clean and beautiful with a swim-up bar. The staff did a pretty good job of keeping activities going but not so many that it was annoying. You could take part, sit and watch, or ignore them pretty successfully. The resort offered FREE scuba certification classes (a serious deal for scuba divers).
In addition to our hanging out at the beach (which was our main focus)we made a few tourist visits around the island. The straw market and downtown Nassau is busy. My husband found the crowded straw market very annoying, "Hey, pretty lady, do you want your hair braided" and "Oh, handsome man, buy your lady one of these" was heard at practically each booth. I found it fun and could handle the cramped quarters, but it's not the place to go for the clostrophobic and easily annoyed crowd (sometimes the heat adds to that!). We took a bus for around 50 cents from our resort to the downtown so we passed all the downtown "sites" but I wasn't too sad that we didn't stop to look around at all of it. It's less than impressive but you may find the history interesting. Along with the straw market, you will find plenty of little shops to browse in - none of which I actually bought anything in. Again, I was there for the beach. I did get my hair braided (and talking the locals down on their prices is a must - and fairly easy to do). T-shirt souveniers are dirt cheap. You can get a lot of the "handmade" stuff at the flea market in the tourist shop down the street so buyer beware. It's more for the experience!
We did take part in the Dolphin Experience.A GREAT time. We recommend the swim. It's pricey ($115/person) but worth every penny. You are in the water for at least 1/2 hour with the dolphins. Bring an underwater camera. They will try to sell you a video tape afterwards so if you have a friend who doesn't want to go in the water - make them tape it and save $45 bucks - but we bought the tape and a picture they took of both of us with the dolphins and we don't regret it. The price includes a boat ride from Paradise Island and we did have a shuttle from our resort to Paradise Island. WE signed up ahead of time but you can try to sign up when you get there - you might have trouble with the dolphin experience. But we signed up for and had a GREAT time on a snorkeling/sailing adventure while we were there (rum punch is free on the boat!).
The Atlantis is huge. I only saw it from a couple miles away but we were stuck in Miami (weather problems) with a lady who was there for 7 days, never left the resort, and still hadn't seen all of it.
You must hit the casinos. We went to the Crystal Casino - fun! fun! fun!
Bring your bathing suits, fun going out clothes, your appetite and have fun! It's great for a honeymoon or for a getaway. I read; however, that any serious "romance" on the beach is illegal there - I'm not sure about that one, but behave!
