I have been to Nassau in the Bahamas twice now and can not wait to return once again. Nassau is a beautiful island with so much to offer and its proximity to New York make it a great place to go for a long weekend if you do not have enough time for a long vacation.
The resorts at Cable Beach are the best places to stay in my estimation. Although it is outside the town their is a public bus you can take for the short ride into the main city area. I think Cable Beach is a much better place to stay because the ocean area their is simply beautiful and much better than in the crowded city. I prefer the Radisson Cable Beach as it is a large, clean hotel with many activities, restaurants and pools. It also has a walkway to the casino next store where there are also many fine shops.
The best shopping by far is at the Straw Market where you can learn to barter on items. At first I didn't think I could do that but after a while you learn how to make a deal. The shopping on Bay Street is the best! From jewelry to t-shirts they have everything at terrific prices.
I saved the best for last and that is the island itself. The beaches are pristine with a turquoise color ocean that you never get tired of swimming in or just gazing at. They have terrific snorkeling trips and booze cruises (not my thing but a lot of people enjoy it).
Also another activity that I highly recommend is a trip to Blue Lagoon Island where you can go swimming with a dolphin. I have done this on each of my trips and can say it is one of the best experiences I have ever had in my life. The cost is about $80 and you must make reservations in advance of your trip as this has become a very popular attraction.
Paradise Island is across a small bridge and very beautiful. It is easy to get to and well worth a look.
Nassau caters to all groups: singles, students, couples, seniors and friends.
