| Trace_Malin's Full Review: Nassau |
There is no other island in the "Caribbean" that will appeal to movie lovers more than New Providence Island or Nassau as it is many times referred to by the name of its capital city. Many films such as "Splash," "Flipper," and James Bond flicks like "Thunderball" and "Never Say Never Again" were shot on location underwater here. You can follow in the footsteps or the fin kicks of 007 as you explore the remains of the Vulcan bomber from "Thunderball" or enter the confines of the Tears of Allah wreck from "Never say Never Again" by day, and then dress in formal attire at night and play Baccarat or have dinner at an elegant restaurant.
If you are less formal and would rather strut around Paul Hogan's stomping grounds you can check out Stuart Cove's dock and dive "Dolphin Pens" or take advantage of eating a cheeseburger in paradise at Dive Dive Dive or the grilled chicken breast. For about $5.00, Dive Dive Dive will take a lunch order on the way back into port after the morning's two tank dive and you will find your burger or chicken waiting with chips and soda. A nice break on the wallet if you decided to stay at one of the more glamorous hotels.
One of the great things about Nassau is that there is something for everyone. If you are a diver traveling with non-divers or a non-diving family, while you are blowing bubbles they can pick from every activity from bike tours to deep sea fishing, exploring, museums, shopping, jet skiing, or just lying in the sun.
Nassau can be as intriguing and romantic as you want to make it, or just a wonderful family vacation.
For divers, Nassau's biggest attraction is the pelagics -- including sharks. I saw a turtle so large near the keel of the Will Laurie wreck resting on the bottom that I thought it was a coral head from a distance. And, let's not forget the sharks! You don't even have to go on the shark feeding dives to see them. Just dive in areas like "Runway" and you should have at least 3 or 4 reef sharks around you. Finally, if your family is a non-diving one, the Atlantis submarine tours will let them get underwater and it is possible to dive near the submarine and let them see you out there doing what you love so much.
One thing about the Bahamas, the seas can get a little choppy so take precautions if you get seasick. You might discover a great seafood dinner at The Traveler's Rest and you may also come across a canon I found. If you do, give it a pat for me!
