I just returned from a 10-day stay in Barbados. The people there are wonderful, and they should be. Their Number one form of income is from tourism. The West Coast of the island that faces the Caribbean and is where all of the resorts are located is called the Gold Coast because that is where the money is made. The island is small, about 12 miles by 21 miles. The language spoken is English.
I went with my sister, her husband, and my 10-year-old son. We stayed at The Almond Beach Village in St. Peter. Almond Beach Resorts owns two properties on Barbados. Both are all inclusive. Room, food, even alcohol are included in the price. Almond Beach Village is for families with children. They have a kids club with activities for children as young as three years old. You can drop off your child and enjoy the day alone if you choose. The second property Almond Beach Club and Spa is for 16 years and older. As a visitor to one club, you are entitled to visit both clubs. If you stay at the Village, you can visit the Spa but you can not bring your children. They have a website. http://www.almondresorts.com
At the Almond Beach Village, there are 5 restaurants. Reservations are required and all restaurants but 1 have a strict dress code. Men (over 16) must wear pants and a shirt with sleeves for dinner. They are less strict at breakfast and lunch but there are still rules such as no hats. There is one restaurant for adults only.
The best part of the Village was the water sports and activities. They have sailing, snorkeling, water skiing, plus kayaking, and a banana boat all part of the price. My child checked in with me and then went off to have fun. He didn't have to tell me each time he changed activities because the resort is very safe and well staffed. He was free to be a little boy and run around. It was great. There are many different pools, including an adult only pool. There is entertainment every night and a disco that opens at 11pm.
The beach has had some damage from recent storms so, while we were there they were doing construction on the beach…and they start early. We were awakened by bulldozers every morning, even Sundays, between 6am and 8am.
The food was not great. They do offer a "dine out" program where you can make a reservation to go to a local restaurant. We went twice. The first restaurant was called Raffles and the second was Rumpas. Both were great. The food had an African influence in both places and was delicious. I highly recommend going to either or both.
Overall, the experience was great. The way that the resort is set up, my child had fun and the adults had a great time too. It holds over 1000 guests but it never felt crowded.
Call ahead and check on the beach situation, the weather (the locals say it never rains there) and the restaurant openings. Sometimes they close one or two during slow periods.
Have fun.
