As a Bajan (I was born and raised in Barbados), I can say with certainty that Barbados is a beautiful place with much to offer. Whether you are going with your family or for a honeymoon, you won't be disappointed. If you go for a summer vacation you can catch the "Cropover" Carnival, which starts in July and runs for several weeks (the climax takes place in August). Cropover is a spectacular sight featuring extravagant costumes, parades with calypsonian bands, and is definitely a unique and exciting experience.
The temperature doesn't vary throughout the year, so there are no seasons (maybe only "dry" and "wet"). The nightlife is unique with all night parties and calypso bands that can give you dance fever. While North America is full of Starbucks coffee shops on every corner, Barbados is full of rum shops where you can taste the Barbados Rum (such as Cockspur and Malibu) that we are notorious for. There are a multitude of fruits unique to the Caribbean that will make your mouth water, and the local cuisine will wake up your taste buds. (A must-try is the flying fish)
Wherever you go in Barbados, a beach is always nearby, and there are tourist sites that make up the history of the island. You can take a boat cruise on the Jolly Roger, discover Sam Lords Castle, or just go snorkeling. Where else can you stand in blue water and see the tropical fish on the bottom? And not to worry, there are no shark infestations on the island.
Cricket is the sport of Barbados and differs from the traditional English version in the level of excitement. Cricket is to Barbados what Basketball/Football is to the Us, and what Hockey is to Canada.
Barbados was once a British colony and this is still evident throughout the island. You'll notice many school children in their neatly pressed uniforms and color-coded sashes. Doing things the "British way" also means that driving is done on the left side of the road. The value of the US dollar in Barbados is almost 2:1, but purchases in Barbados can be a bit pricey.
The people of Barbados are outgoing and unique, and everybody has a story to tell. There is a lot of history still left on the this tiny island "shaped like a boot", and Bajans (Barbadians) are proud of who they are and where they came from; one visit to Barbados and you would see why.
