I've traveled to the British Virgin Islands many times now, and I've stayed on pretty much every possible Island (except for Necker Island $$$). As for a nice, relaxed, tourist-oriented vacation, Virgin Gorda is the best. Virgin Gorda is very welcoming. The people are nice, the food is generally good, and there's a good deal of things to do... and the resorts are much nicer... The resorts I would recommend are the ones in "Gorda sound" (aka North sound). "The Bitter end Yacht Club" is one of the best bets. Also, if you want to be on the flatter part of the Island, and you don't want to be trapped, go to "Little Dix Bay." The food is good there, and the rooms are nice. Just know that if you are in "Gorda Sound," chances are your only way around is by boat... The are no roads that lead to "The Bitter End" for example... No matter where you go though, you'll find a nice beach, and plenty to do (Windsurfing, sailing, jetskiing, fishing, You name it)... The only question is, where do you want to be located.
The Island has a lot to offer for anybody. It's easier to find organized trips on Virgin Gorda, so I recommend, if you don't know the area, that you find some charters that will show you some nice snorkeling, or scuba diving. If you are more up for adventure, I would recommend renting your own boat. With that, you can go to the reef that protects Gorda sound. There, you'll find some beautiful diving/snorkeling. If you have a bigger boat, you can even go to the Anegada reef (see my anegada review) for some amazing Dives... and if you're a good diver, do check out "The Invisibles." It's a random spot just north of gorda sound, where rocks are barely below the water's surface. These rocks dive straight down to about 50-70ft, and there are some beautiful residents there (Sea turtles, morays, sharks...). You'll find a "Dive mooring" there, so you don't have to anchor your boat (It's for 60ft max. boats). It's only for expert divers though, because the currents there get very strong, and can sweep away even the best swimmers.
On the Island itself, there is obviously "the Baths," although I have found that area to be a bit dead (fish-wise) from excessive tourism... The copper mine is fairly interesting, and there are some good restaurants. Late night, though, everybody sleeps. Don't expect to find a real local "bash" there... It's a perfect place to go and relax; enjoy some good watersports... Gorda sound is perfect for that.

ps. when I went I stayed in a house called "Toad Hall." If you have a large group (6-8 I think) look it up. it was a nice house... you could walk to the Baths.
pps. If you are in Gorda Sound, check out the "Saba rock" burger shack, near "The Bitter End." It's got some great "boogas" (say it with a thick caribbean accent and it actually sounds like "burger") as they like to call them...
